Critique Camp

Three Week Critique Camp supported by Writers of Kern
Critique 101 (for self-edit and critique group participation)
Hone your craft by sharpening your critique tools, for yourself and your critique groups.
  • The importance of establishing character, setting, and voice on page one.
  • How the opening image or scene should relate to a story's overall structure.
  • How to introduce story questions that entice rather than confuse.
  • How to avoid clich├ęd openings.
  • What starting in in medias res really means—and, more importantly, what it doesn't.

Held: 9/13/2016 at 6:00 p.m.
Cost: Free (for all CWC and/or WOK members); $25 for nonmembers
Sessions: 3 consecutive Tuesday (September 13th, September 20th, and September 27, 2016)
Duration of each session: 1 ½ - 2 hours
Total contact time: 6 hours plus homework
Seating: Limited to 9 attendees
Requirement: Attendees must have access to a computer with a camera. We will be utilizing Google Hangouts (instructions will be given).
Please note:
  1. This Webinar is a workshop with author’s names withheld (to create a safe environment)
  2. Register early, as all attendees will have an assignment to do in preparation for the first session. Registered attendees will receive the assignment no later than September 1, 2016. Those who register after that date will receive the assignment as soon as they register.
  3. When workshop list is filled, a waitlist will open.
Workshop Description:
Each attendee must submit the first five pages of his or her novel and will be expected to actively workshop other attendees’ opening pages within the provided workshopping guidelines. We’ll discuss our works-in-progress and help each other brainstorm various possible entry points in relation to each work’s overall story structure.
During the last session, I will select a MIP (Most Improved Pages) winner.

Extras:
During the last session, there will be Query Questions. We’ll talk about the submission process (life after critiques).

Registration:
Contact Clarissa Kae. Each email/entry will be time stamped, first come, first served.
